Peptides: Episode 1: What's Actually in a Peptide?
Welcome back to the Keys podcast. Today we're starting a five-part series on one of the most talked-about words in skincare right now: peptides. And we're starting at the very beginning, because most of the confusion around peptides comes from people never actually being told what one is.
Here's the simple version. A peptide is a short chain of amino acids. Amino acids are the basic building blocks of protein, the same protein that makes up your skin, your hair, your muscles, really any tissue in your body. If you think of amino acids as letters, a peptide is a short word made of just a few of those letters, and a full protein, like collagen or elastin, is a complete sentence built from many peptides strung together.
Your skin is already making peptides constantly. It's part of how skin repairs itself every single day. Some peptides act like raw building material. Others act like messengers, tiny instructions that tell your skin cells what to do next, things like “make more collagen” or “calm down, we've got inflammation here.” And some peptides help clear away old, damaged proteins so new, healthy ones can take their place.
So when a skincare product includes a peptide, the idea is to borrow that same natural signaling system. You're essentially handing your skin a specific, very small instruction. Not a miracle, not a filler injection, just a small molecule your skin already knows how to recognize and, sometimes, how to act on.
That's really the whole foundation. Peptides aren't some exotic lab invention that showed up out of nowhere. They're a natural part of how skin already works. What's changed is that scientists have identified specific peptide sequences that can be added to a formula to nudge skin toward doing more of what it already wants to do, like producing collagen or healing faster.
In our next episode, we're going to talk about why the word “peptide” has become such a powerful marketing tool, and how to tell the difference between a product with real science behind it and one that's just borrowing the word for credibility.
That's next time, on Peptides, Decoded.
